Pricing explained

What you are paying for, and what you are not

Professional Christmas light installation is priced by scope: how much of the home is lit and how complex it is to light. There is no fixed price per house because a brick ranch in Rantoul and a six-gable two-story in Bloomington's Hawthorne are different jobs. What should be the same everywhere is transparency, so here is how the number comes together.

Our quotes are all-inclusive. The price you approve covers the custom design, the commercial-grade lights themselves, installation, timers, season-long maintenance, January takedown and off-season storage. There are no add-on fees for travel, repairs or removal, and no surprise invoice in January.

The five things that drive the price

  1. Linear feet of roofline. The biggest factor. An eave-only outline on a ranch might be 100 feet; a full outline of every gable, dormer and ridge on a large two-story can be 300 to 400 feet.
  2. Peaks, stories and complexity. Each gable adds line, clips and ladder time. Second-story and steep rooflines take longer and need standoff equipment.
  3. Trees and landscape. Wrapped trunks, netted shrubs and stake lights along walks are priced by the tree and the foot.
  4. Greenery. Pre-lit wreaths and garland on doors, columns and railings are priced per piece and per foot.
  5. Timing. Booking early locks in your date and our early-booking discount; late-season installs during the busiest weeks are harder to fit.

Why the first year and later years differ

The first season includes building your custom-cut light lines to your home's exact measurements. In later seasons those lines come out of storage and go back up, so returning customers typically pay less for the same display. This is also why switching installers every year costs more than staying with one: the lines are built for your house.

Professional vs. doing it yourself

Box-store lights for a full roofline, plus clips, cords, timers and a tall enough ladder, add up quickly, and that is before a Saturday on the roof and the January takedown. Store-bought strands also fail within a couple of seasons. Professional installation with commercial-grade lights, maintenance and storage costs more than a box of lights and less than most people assume once the ladder, the time and the replacement strands are counted. What Central Illinois homeowners say

4.9 stars on Google

  • Our lights were amazing. Lights were done quickly and efficiently. When the season was over he was back to take them down just when he said he would. We have had him put our lights up for several years and will continue to! Highly recommended.

  • We just had our lights installed by Midwest Holiday Lighting on Thanksgiving day. We just called them and let them know we would like them to do our light install and they worked us in quickly. They were very friendly, knowledgeable, courteous, and patient. We love the holiday lighting they installed on our house and will use them for years to come. They provided all the materials, completed the install quickly, and will store the lights for us during the off season. I added the wreath last minute and they had all the supplies to install it. We could not be happier with Tom and his crew and the job they did installing our lights. Thank You Midwest Holiday Lighting for making our holidays feel more merry and our home look brighter! Enjoy!

  • Tom is honest and hardworking, you won't find better out there!

FAQ

Pricing questions

See all questions
Do you publish prices?
We publish how pricing works rather than a price list, because the range between a small ranch and a large estate is wide and a number without a measurement would mislead you. A free design visit produces an exact quote.
Are there hidden fees?
No. Design, lights, install, timers, maintenance, takedown and storage are all in the quoted price. There are no travel fees anywhere in our 60-mile service area.
Is there a minimum?
We quote every home individually. Small, clean displays on ranches and townhomes are some of our favorite jobs.
How does the early-booking discount work?
Book a new residential install before the cutoff date and the discount is applied to your quote. Mention it when you request your quote.
Is permanent lighting cheaper over time?
For homeowners who light every year, often yes. See the permanent lighting cost guide.
